Antrim Castle Gardens forms an exceptional historical landscape, considered to be unique in Ireland and features one of the best examples of a late 17th-century Anglo-Dutch water garden. The site covers an area of approximately 52 acres and is one of the most intact visible landscapes of this period. At the heart of the gardens is a complex of buildings which includes Clotworthy House, as well as a number of outbuildings across the former Stable Yard.
The project consisted of the restoration and refurbishment of Grade A and Grade B listed Victorian Clotworthy House, Long Barn, former Stable Yard and extensive historic gardens including the Canals. Clotworthy House dates back to the 17th Century and was the former living accommodation for the grooms and stable lads employed by Sir John Clotworthy and his family who occupied Antrim Castle.
The project involved the conversion of these existing buildings into an Arts workshop, education theatre and studio. Refurbished conference facilities were provided in the Massereene and Skeffington rooms.
The works also included the restoration and refurbishment of the existing historic Castle Gardens, representing the largest historic garden restoration ever undertaken in Northern Ireland. New roads, paths and car parking were created to improve access. The yew tree garden, pleasure gardens, terrace gardens, castle approach and stone walls were reinstated. In addition, the extensive long canals and round pond, castle site moat the Italian Tower and Deerpark Bridge were extensively restored. External works included extensive planting and soft landscaping works.
The site was awarded Performance Beyond Compliance under the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme.

“I first started with Henry Brothers as a post-grad placement student, fulfilling a requirement of my Masters in Sustainable Development to partake in a 12-week placement within a construction sector business. Working as an Environmental and Quality Placement Student for some of Henry Brothers’ sites, I quickly learnt about the requirements and implementation processes resulting from our industry certifications (ISO 14001 AND 9001 standards), which are used on-site, on a daily basis. Since completing both my placement and my Masters, I am delighted to have become a permanent member of the company, working within the SHEQ team as an Environmental and Quality Advisor. I have continued to add to my skillset through my continual CPD with the company, becoming an Internal Auditor for our Integrated Management Systems as well as undergoing Aconex training, a platform for all our site projects. I have enjoyed every minute of my 18 months with Henry Brothers and, because of the ongoing support, training, and mentoring I have received to date, I have managed to progress in my role and career with the company.”
