This project involved the construction a 2/3 storey building (2762m2), to provide specialist teaching rooms and school administration at Aldercar High School.

The project works included the demolition of the existing main school building, as well as the internal remodelling/refurbishment of an adjacent teaching block, with associated external façade reinstatement work.

External works involved drainage and connectivity of services to the existing retained school buildings.

The site was adjacent to residential areas and in a live education campus, right in the heart of the campus.  The main access road provided shared access for the campus, vocational training deliveries, staff/users and site personnel/deliveries. The surrounding area, meanwhile, comprised of residential areas, school campus, infant school, multi-use games area (MUGA), sports hall, and sixth form centre.

All of the above elements posed challenges in terms of health and safety, logistics and of course, in minimising inconvenience through meticulous coordination and management.

To address the constraints/risks, sectional completions were programmed as follows:

1. New building and external works

2. Refurb of part of Building D

3. Refurb of remainder of Building D

4. Minor internal works to part of Building D

5. Demolition of Building C

Decanting of existing classrooms were planned and programmed. Site hoardings and temporary pedestrian routes/barriers were used.

We worked closely with the utility companies/statutory authorities throughout, especially in regard to the coordination and programming of a new incoming main from a sub-station.  We agreed the scope, duration and phasing of this work and traffic and pedestrian management measures.

The project featured a photovoltaic roof and high spec airtightness.  It was fully designed and constructed to BREEAM Very Good standard although the client did not wish to register the project with BREEAM.

We achieved a record-breaking Considerate Constructors’ Scheme (CCS) score of 46/50, which put this site as one of the highest-scoring in the UK, winning a Silver Award.

“I first started with Henry Brothers as a post-grad placement student, fulfilling a requirement of my Masters in Sustainable Development to partake in a 12-week placement within a construction sector business.

Working as an Environmental and Quality Placement Student for some of Henry Brothers’ sites, I quickly learnt about the requirements and implementation processes resulting from our industry certifications (ISO 14001 AND 9001 standards), which are used on-site, on a daily basis.

Since completing both my placement and my Masters, I am delighted to have become a permanent member of the company, working within the SHEQ team as an Environmental and Quality Advisor. I have continued to add to my skillset through my continual CPD with the company, becoming an Internal Auditor for our Integrated Management Systems as well as undergoing Aconex training, a platform for all our site projects.

I have enjoyed every minute of my 18 months with Henry Brothers and, because of the ongoing support, training, and mentoring I have received to date, I have managed to progress in my role and career with the company.”
