This Design & Build project included the design, planning, and construction of a new, fully installed Engine Test Facility (IETF) – including all associated internal and external infrastructure – on a brownfield site at RAF Lossiemouth.
The works included the provision of a steel portal framed “Hush House”, with profiled metal acoustic cladding and loading door to fully enclose a single aircraft during testing – as well as limit internal and external noise. External works included the construction of concrete aircraft pavements to provide access to the facility from the existing Taxiway. Also included was the demolition of redundant Explosive Stores (PESs), whilst construction of a new bitmac access road and associated drainage and services was also required. An annexe to the main facility contained a control office, WC, pump room and plant room.
The IETF accommodates the aircraft during high-powered Engine Ground Runs (EGRs), which are necessary to prove the capability of engines that are either new or have undergone maintenance. The existing IETFs at the Station are open facilities (de-tuners) whereas an enclosed structure – commonly referred to as a ‘Hush House’ – was required to address the need for a noise attenuation facility, in order to protect military and civilian personnel from the high level and low-frequency noise generated by aircraft during high-powered EGRs.
The project also included a fire suppression system, incorporating electrical and diesel pumps (Duplex), and a dedicated water supply tank. A dedicated floor channel drain at the main doors leading to an underground storage tank was also installed, to catch any fire suppression foam or spillages which occurred in the facility.
Fire alarm system, CCTV, voice/data communication, lightning protection and external lighting were also installed.
The foundations to the facility, including the annexe and the water supply tank, were supported on driven concrete piles.Contact us
