The design and construction of the new STEMLab building which we delivered for  Loughborough University, provided its science and engineering students with state-of-the-art learning facilities, including teaching spaces, laboratories, and a number of ancillary spaces. The new building is designed to create a positive impression of a modern learning establishment.

The project works involved the construction of a modern steel-framed, split-level, three-storey building, complete with precast floors and staircases, brickwork cladding and curtain walling, and extensive external works including disabled parking. The works also involved full mechanical, electrical and AV installation, internal finishes, lift-installation, laboratory furniture fit out, and fume cupboard installation. The majority of plant is roof-mounted whilst PV installation is also included on the roof.

The external works include a beautiful terraced seating area, to the front of the building, and varying gradient running tracks positioned to the rear.

The building is divided into a number of different academic areas including engineering workshops, a 3D printing suite and design studios, CAD rooms and laboratories  (electrical, engineering, materials, physics and optics), and a number of high-tech laboratories. The approximate net internal area is 3700m².

This incredibly challenging project which we were excited to be chosen to deliver, was carried out on the green field area adjacent to the West entrance of the Loughborough University campus, which accommodates approximately 15,000 students and 4000 staff every single day.

We are proud of the fact that the University continued to operate as normal right throughout the construction works, something which we were keen to ensure at the outset, given the importance of maintaining safety and minimising impact in a living, breathing student campus environment.

The site received a Performance Beyond Compliance under the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme.
