Nottingham Trent University, Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF)

MTIF facilitates the development and commercialisation of innovative medical technologies, devices, and therapeutics
to improve the quality of patient care

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

A new two-storey 2,500m² development incorporating two clean rooms (featuring one of the largest clean rooms in the UK), a virtual theatre, a series of specialist laboratories, teaching spaces, offices write-up spaces, communal spaces and a meeting room.

The specialist medical Labs include Smart Textiles, Biomolecular, Optics, Autoclave, Tissue Culture, Optics, Photonics, Lasor Processing, Grey room, Electro Spinning, and CAT 2 Microbiology. The new facility enables students and industry to undertake fundamental research projects to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to medical technology development that will reduce both the ‘time to market’ and the cost associated with the creation and commercialisation of innovative health technologies, medical devices, and therapeutics.

The steel frame building comprises of facing brickwork with rainscreen cladding and curtain walling. At the rear of the building, the brick is supplemented by zinc cladding. The design incorporated large ground floor glazing elements enabling ‘passers-by’ to view the “robotics area” and “vacuum processing laboratory”. The building has been designed to BREEAM “Excellent” standard, with an EPC “A” rating.
