Undertaken in a live college environment, this new facility dining hall allows for the two spaces to be used in conjunction with each other, whilst acoustic partitions and doors were installed to also allow the spaces to function independently.
The works comprised the design and build of the following elements:
1. Martin Hall Dining and Kitchen
An extension to the west side of Martin Hall adjacent to the theatre and linking through to the existing Martin Hall cafe facility. The extension consisted of a 250 place dining hall and kitchen. The kitchen was enlarged to include the university’s ‘refresh’ operation that provides the cold food for the various locations around the campus. This also involved the creation of a new road access.
2. Towers Common Room
The provision of a new a common room at the base of the Towers Student accommodation.
3. The formation of a new Pedestrian Walkway
The continuation of an interconnecting route through to the design centre at the southern end as identified as part of the master plan for the area together with all associated external works and landscape proposals.
4. The demolition of the single-storey Ann Packer Building
5. The demolition of the existing two-storey Towers Dining and Kitchen Facility
Undertaken in a live college environment, this new facility dining hall allows for the two spaces to be used in conjunction with each other, whilst acoustic partitions and doors were installed to also allow the spaces to function independently. The hall is also used as a teaching space and can be joined to form a larger seminar room. Finally, the building also provides lively atria heart space, which is ideal for use as exhibitions and functions.
Following extensive collaboration with Loughborough University, we changed the lobby at the front entrance in order to create a much more open feel for diners: folding doors were introduced so that the inside space could flow more easily in to the outside space, a pergola detail was added, and an area for outside dining was created.
The project had a challenging programme with a phased hand-over, while the existing occupants of the Towers Dining Hall were fully decanted and relocated into the new facilities prior to demolition of the existing building.
The site received a Performance Beyond Compliance under the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme.Contact us
