RAF Waddington, Dye Pod Operations

Construction of a new facility for the Red Arrows, which has a key role to play in their legendary air displays.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Royal Air Force Acrobatic Team which was formed in 1964, is relocating from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire ten miles down the road to RAF Waddington. As a result, a new ‘dye pod’ facility has been built at RAF Waddington to maintain and refill the equipment on the planes which creates the colourful air displays that the RAFAT team are so famous for.

Until now, they had always used a number of ISO shipping containers, which don’t have ventilation, to store, maintain and refill the equipment. This is then attached underneath the aircraft’s fuselage to create the coloured vapours. The new single-storey steel frame dye bay, will revolutionise the way they prepare before display flights.

Standing at 260 square meters, It is completely bespoke as it is the first of its type ever built to give an aerial display team an area to assemble their dye and carry out the critical maintenance required on the dye pods.
