The University of Manchester, Chemistry Building Refurbishment – Levels 4 and 5
Refurbishment works to provide a 21st century teaching and research environment with cutting-edge Chemistry facilities.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
As Principal Contractor and Designer, Henry Brothers completed this refurbishment project on Levels 4 and 5 of the occupied 7-storey 1960’s Chemistry building – one of the biggest of its kind in the UK – to provide a contemporary environment and overcome problematic fume extract system issues.
The refurbishment works covering an area of 1,320m2 included full strip-out; the reconfiguration of layouts to create flexible laboratory space; the provision of Computational Chemistry facilities, new fume cupboards, gases, fixed benching, write-up spaces, glazed screens, office accommodation, and break-out areas on both levels; the connection of external ventilation ducts into existing fans; the removal of asbestos from service risers; together with the upgrade of the Level 8 plant room and roof chiller deck improvements.
Delivered in the busy city-centre Oxford Road campus within a live operational building, the project achieved an optimal Considerate Constructors Scheme score of 45/45.
