New Service Centre for the maintenance, operation, and parking of the new ‘Glider’ bus and existing Metro bus fleets

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The construction of a new Service Centre for the maintenance, operation, and parking of the new ‘Glider’ bus and existing Metro bus fleets.

The facility includes 6,600m² of Garages, Workshops and Stores; a 1,200m² Bus Refuelling Station, Bus Wash and Tachograph building and 2,100m² of Cat A office accommodation for 220 workstations with meeting rooms, kitchen/canteen facilities, breakout zones, locker facilities and gym.

The Bus Maintenance Workshop included a mix of pits and bays to facilitate vehicle maintenance, with works including the installation of bus lifts, and fixed and mobile working platforms. In addition to the vehicle bays, a Paint Prep/Spray booth together with several associated workshops (Sheet Metal, Engine Build, Woodworking, Electrical, and Trim) were constructed within the facility to support the upkeep of the fleet.

The civil and external works included 28,500m² of paving, new access roads, and hardstanding; 145 parking spaces for the entire Glider bus fleet and standard buses, and 200 spaces for staff/visitor parking; security fencing; provision of a security hut; vehicle barriers; power (incl. substation); and extensive site drainage with SUDS and rainwater harvesting. The works also involved a substantial ground stabilisation package to the roads/parking area, comprising Vibro BMC Piling and geotextile membranes.
